Reckoning

A “Reckoning” is the broadest unit in the Concordance’s calendar, spanning many cycles; “cycle” is the finer unit the Wire uses for year-scale dating. The current era, per every dateline in the active Wire record, is the Third Reckoning. Neither the First nor Second Reckoning’s end date, nor the criteria for declaring a new one, appears anywhere in the archived record. The boundary is announced, not derived, and the Wire has never reported the announcement itself, only datelines that already assume it.

The Wire’s dateline format is consistent across every recorded dispatch: a location header, a cycle number, and “Third Reckoning,” with no variation. The First Circle’s administrative secretariat and Ministry-attributed dispatches alike use the same format without exception. The phrase appears as boilerplate rather than assertion, which may be why no Wire edition has paused to define what a Reckoning marks or when one ends.

What constitutes a cycle is similarly unspecified. The archived record runs from Cycle 123 through Cycle 126, all within the Third Reckoning, without a dispatch noting any cycle’s beginning or close. Whether a cycle corresponds to a fixed astronomical period of Ossuran Prime, to an administrative calendar year, or to some unit the Concordance does not publish, no Wire edition says.

The Hollow Choir has offered the closest thing to a public characterization. High Chorister Ansel Dree has twice described the current Reckoning as “the appointed cycle of outward mandate,” framing it in terms of the Long Reach expansion. The First Circle has issued no parallel statement. Whether the transition from Second to Third Reckoning corresponded to a military threshold, a doctrinal declaration, or a territorial claim the Concordance later reframed, the Wire has not reported.

The term “Third Reckoning” implies at least two prior Reckonings formally concluded and named. What ended them is not in the archived record.
