Five Observables

A five-item taxonomy of anomalous performance characteristics — anti-gravity lift, instantaneous acceleration, hypersonic velocity without signature, low observability, and trans-medium travel — popularized by Luis Elizondo and the To The Stars Academy in 2017 to describe the flight profiles reported in cases such as the Nimitz Tic Tac and USS Roosevelt Gimbal encounters.

The Five Observables are a taxonomy of five anomalous flight characteristics used to describe the reported performance profile of UAP that the U.S. Intelligence Community has classified as unexplained. The framework was popularized by former AATIP director Luis Elizondo and colleagues at the private venture To The Stars Academy of Arts & Science (TTSA) beginning in late 2017, and has since been referenced — in whole or in part — in Department of Defense briefings, congressional testimony, and mainstream press coverage of the modern UAP disclosure era.

The five characteristics

  1. Anti-gravity lift. Sustained hover or vertical station-keeping without visible means of propulsion, lift surfaces, or exhaust.
  2. Sudden and instantaneous acceleration. Changes in velocity or direction that appear to exceed the material limits of any known airframe or crew survivability envelope.
  3. Hypersonic velocities without signatures. Speeds in excess of Mach 5 without the expected sonic boom, heat plume, or air-disturbance signature.
  4. Low observability. Poor or inconsistent tracking behavior across radar, infrared, and visible-light sensors — sometimes described as intermittent radar returns or unusually small thermal cross-section for the reported size.
  5. Trans-medium travel. Reported transition between air, space, and water without loss of speed, structural failure, or apparent change in configuration.

The Nimitz Tic Tac encounter (November 2004; Case #00041) is the canonical reference case Elizondo cites when illustrating the framework — witnesses reported multiple observables in a single engagement. The 2015 Gimbal video from USS Theodore Roosevelt is likewise cited for its unusual rotation and station-keeping behavior.

Origin

The taxonomy was introduced publicly in the wake of the 16 December 2017 New York Times article by Helene Cooper, Ralph Blumenthal, and Leslie Kean that revealed the existence of AATIP and released two Navy FLIR videos. Elizondo, Christopher Mellon, and the TTSA team refined and disseminated the observables in subsequent briefings, media appearances, and TTSA’s 2019 “Unidentified” History Channel series. The list is not a formal DoD classification; it is a heuristic developed by Elizondo based on the case set he reviewed inside AATIP.

Government and IC adoption

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s June 2021 Preliminary Assessment on UAP did not adopt the five-observables framework by name, but described several of the same characteristics — including apparent high acceleration, low signature, and trans-medium behavior — as recurring features in the incident set it examined. Subsequent AARO reports have used more conservative language, generally attributing anomalous readings to sensor artifacts, parallax, or misidentification wherever a mundane explanation is available.

Critiques

Skeptical analysts — including physicist Mick West and, in more measured form, AARO under its first director Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick — have argued that the five observables are conflations of sensor artifacts, parallax errors, and pilot perception rather than genuine performance characteristics of physical craft. The Council treats the framework as a descriptive vocabulary, not a claim: it is useful shorthand for what witnesses report, not evidence of what actually occurred.

ODNI
Office of the Director of National Intelligence — the U.S. cabinet-level office overseeing the 18 components of the Intelligence Community, and the publisher of the 2021 Preliminary Assessment that catalyzed the modern UAP disclosure cycle.
NHI
Non-Human Intelligence — a term increasingly used in U.S. government UAP discourse to refer to any intelligence not of human origin, with deliberate breadth (terrestrial-but-non-human, extraterrestrial, interdimensional, etc.).
